Off to Curaçao in April. Anyone been?

Did St Lucia about 20 years ago and loved it. Went to Jamaica in October and just felt like the locals were always trying to rip you off, or any conversation always turned out to be about them selling you weed. Race is also a big issue IMO.

went a couple of years ago and stayed at a place called jade mountain
it's stunning but very chunky - we were on a freebie as my wife is a travel writer
it's got a sister resort called anse chastenet which is cheaper but still in a great setting
might be an option for a few days

Stick to the Virgin Islands. And only St Johns in the US ones St Thomas isn't that nice.

Virgin Gorda (BVI) Tortola (BVI) Jost Van Dyke (BVI) and St Johns (USVI) are the only bits of the carribean that are truly lovely and there's no scruffy poor people mucking about. And they are nice and hilly and not flat.

Go there your flight won't be cheap though.

Having said that, I very much doubt you will be a victim of crime in Cuba, it's just not that type of place

Just come back from a Caribbean cruise that included St Lucia. Its lovely everywhere and the people are great. Soufriere is near the Pitons which is worth a look we did that by catarmaran and the snorkelling is also good.

Can`t fault the place.

Enjoy you will!

I've only been to the Nassau and wasn't impressed, scruffy
And pestered by locals. I'm told St Martin, Barts, Bermuda and a few others are nice. I recommend Castaway Cay if you want crime free, unspoilt and natural, only 90 people live there with 95% of the island uninhabited.

Plenty of chicas & janiteras in Cuba when i went there ~ well worth a visit for the single young man

The crime rate is low there for several reasons, not necessarily race related. There is no obvious drug problem, there's nothing to nick apart from off the tourists & there's a policeman on every street corner in Havana holding a machine gun!

What you do have to be careful of there though is helping the locals or encouraging any sort of private enterprise

Bloke back in the day went to Cuba. I asked how it was.

Said "I got a whore for 2 weeks, worked out at about £50 for the whole time. AND she cleaned up the flat AND cooked me breakfast every morning"...

Not once did he mention anything about the actual sodding place!

Went in 2013, amazing place. Stayed near Castries at the RENDEZVOUS. Absolute paradise.

Could the lack of violent crime in Cuba be anything to do with them being of mostly Hispanic background instead of negro background?

Re: St Lucia advice
cuba is good although i don't know much about communism everybody gets a job everybody gets a house and everybody gets to see the doctor so i did not see any beggars and not many vendors. No agravation whatsoever except for some light hearted selling of cigars on the beach for a dollar . which was very nice .Few kids asked frr some sweets when i was wondering around havana on a guided tour enjoyed it would go again .

While in Jamaica I did mention that Bob Marley was half Engish.......

This was a mistake.

Go to Cuba. Spend some time in Havana. Go before America takes over.Brilliant place.

NewtonsPartyBag ~ I've been going to the Caribbean for nearly 20 years & previously owned a villa in Tobago (in a gated estate) for 12 years, going out 4 or 5 times a year

I can honestly say that I've never had one problem either.

However, I know plenty of people who have ranging from aggravated burglary, robbing at gunpoint & cutlass attacks
All of these attacks being at neighbouring villas or on local beaches, in what were previously regarded as "safe" places NOT the ghettos of Bethel or Laventville

One of the attacks took place on the gated estate where I lived a couple of years ago on New Years Eve (I wasn't there at the time) Two gun wielding robbers in balaclavas pounced on a group of residents & visitors as they came out to celebrate the New Year

Sadly, these sort of incidents started to happen more & more frequently so I decided to get out

Incidently, the above incident (like many others) was never reported & the perpetrators never caught

In November 2014 a German couple were found hacked to death on a (not very isolated) beach. The police have not apprehended anyone yet (& almost certainly never will) although they are treating it as murder

Re: St Lucia advice
Every part of the Caribbean ive been its the same story, dont go, youll get arse raped, shot etc etc.

Never had 1 problem.

If you go walking around shanty town shitholes in your Gucci loafers expect a bit a bit of stick.

Bethall: I agree, Jamaica is rubbish, they ram Bob Marley down your throat for the whole 2 week stay. Service was terrible which just seemed to be something you have to accept as everything is 'I ree' (alright) and locals are so relaxed they cant be bothered. Bunch of lazy locals and you cant go out anywhere as you run the risk of being pestered by locals or worse. At the hotel I stayed at they booked us on the wrong day for an excursion, after waiting outside the hotel for 30 mins without the coach appeared I queried it and the woman told me she had booked it for the day after by mistake but no apology at all. I would never go back.
